You already know the feeling. The message that was almost convincing, the seller who stopped replying, the job offer that wanted a deposit. This site is written for people who have been caught once and would rather see the next one coming from a long way off, before any money moves.
- Sheftali’s Unknown has been running since 2009 and is still publishing. There are close to 500 articles you can search.
- A scam gets written up here only after we have followed it through. The message, the fake listing, the account that vanishes, all of it recorded before anyone is told what to watch for. Advertising and paid placement keep the lights on. Paid links are labelled as paid, which on a site about being misled is not a small thing.
- The questions are the ones people type at two in the morning. Is this listing real. Is this recruiter real. I have already paid, so what can I still do about it now.
- We say when a platform is at fault, not only the person running the scam on it. Marketplaces build the doors these people walk through, and we keep saying so.
- Follow along and you start spotting the shape of it early, which is the only part of this that ever really protects anybody once the money has left. You get an hour back. Sometimes a lot more.
We work backwards from something that actually happened to somebody. Then we look at where the platform let it through, because a scam that keeps working usually has a door somebody has decided not to close. We name the door.
Most advice tells you to be careful, and careful is not a plan you can follow at midnight.
